Common Strands Of Mobile Learning Implementation
Mobile Learning is a nascent discipline in education. A primary factor in the development of mobile learning is the increasingly continuous integration of cell phones into our society. In addition to cellular phones, there has been an increase in the use of non-phone wireless devices such as MP3 players and personal digital assistants.
Despite the fact that these devices do not perform voice services, they do have many of the same services as today's Smartphone including basic word processing and Internet access. This increase in wireleless connectivity has led educators and researchers to investigate methods of integrating mobile devices into education. Researchers are increasingly investigating how mobile learning can advance education for students and teachers.
Mobile learning can thus be described as an e-learning analog that uses mobile devices in place of desktop computers. This type of learning has the potential to serve in contexts similar to e-learning. The integration of mobile devices with other technologies such as Bluetooth and GPS, enable mobile learning applications to provide context-aware applications to learners in a manner not previously realized. Typically, students visiting museums have been able to collaborate using mobile devices to play scavenger hunt game.
Recognizing that there is potential for learning anywhere and anytime, some researchers define mobile learning as including any environment that supports scenarios in which the learner's mobility is germane to the educational environment. For instance in an open field, learners can freely travel with the devices to explore the natural surroundings and then relay the information to classmates in the classroom.
Essentially, mobile learning supports the learning of the nomadic population in Nigeria. In this circumstance, mobile phones are employed as a means of communicating between course coordinators and nomadic learners in order not to disrupt their nomadic lifestyle
Generally, there are three universal strands of mobile learning implementation, each seeking to enhance learning environments.The primary strand uses mobile learning to support communications between instructors and students as well as between peers. The second strand utilizes mobile learning to improve learning environments by providing a platform for the implementation of learning theories as well as support for learner collaboration. The third makes use of mobile learning to deliver educational material to learners.
